IT automation: Challenges, benefits, and implementation

L'IT automation automation is no longer a trend, but a strategic imperative for organizations. It is being driven by a combination of factors:

First, the technological context. The growing adoption of cloud, containers and microservices architectures is driving dynamic, scalable... and complex environments. Automation becomes essential to keep pace.

Secondly, the economic environment is pushing companies to reduce their Time to Marketto be more agile, and to improve the customer experience. This calls for faster, more reliable IT processes that consume fewer resources.

Finally, CIOs are seeking to redeploy their teams' efforts on high value-added tasksto support business innovation. Automation enables IT talent to be freed from repetitive tasks, in favor of strategic projects.

An HR and technological challenge

In this context, the recruitment of IT experts capable of managing Linux or open source environments is becoming a priority. According to a study by Fondation Linux and Dice, 83% of employers place these profiles at the heart of their HR strategy.

But the scarcity of these profiles, combined with their high technological expectations, forces companies to differentiate themselves. L'automation becomes a lever of attractiveness It enables teams to be entrusted with more motivating, more technical and more strategic missions.

As John Allessio, Vice President of Red Hat Global Services, summarizes:

"The result of automation is scalability: less effort per person to maintain and develop your IT environment."

Automation still scares people... wrongly so

Despite its obvious benefits, automation can raise fears. A survey conducted in 2016 revealed that 7% of IT professionals professionals perceived automation as a threat to their jobs.

It is therefore essential to support this transformation with pedagogy. It's not a question of replacing human resources, but of refocus them on their expertiseby eliminating manual, time-consuming tasks with no added value.

Identify the right processes to automate

The first step is to a detailed analysis of existing processes. The aim is to identify those that slow down the IT team's agility without really contributing to business value.

For example:

  • virtual machine provisioning,
  • software update management,
  • reporting, deployment, or backup tasks.

But beware: automating a useless or ill-conceived process solves nothing. Before any implementation, it is essential to question the usefulness and structure of the workflows concerned.

Implement progressively (and intelligently)

Automation should not be approached as a sprint, but as a structured structured marathon. A gradual approach secures gains without disrupting the existing system.

Start with simple, frequent, well-documented tasks. Each automated process must be tested, fed back and adjusted if necessary. This iterative phase is crucial to avoid side effects.

⚠️ Because poorly thought-out automation can have the opposite effect: loss of control, cascading errors and IS instability. Automating without reviewing processes means amplifying their shortcomings.

Automation: a strategic lever for IT

The goal is not just operational optimization. Automation must become a pillar of IT strategystrategy for long-term competitiveness.

It enables the company :

  • accelerate its development cycles,
  • make IT operations more reliable,
  • make its IS more scalable and resilient,
  • and, above all, to focus its human resources on what really matters.

This transformation requires governance, planning and a clear vision. Well-controlled automation creates a culture of continuous improvementwhere teams innovate without sacrificing quality or safety.
