VDI or desktop agility

More and more companies are adopting virtualization as one of the solutions. This enables them to meet the challenges of workplace transformation. This saves a great deal of time and effort in the process of upgrading to new platforms or application versions. Security patches to be deployed on all workstations, configuring a computer for a new employee, integrating a new software version... Managing an IT estate is far from easy. It is often the source of errors, bugs and costs. In short, it's the exact opposite of an agile IT approach, which is more efficient and satisfies everyone: IT teams, business units and, of course, management. Against this backdrop, many organizations are starting to move away from "fat" clients towards virtualized desktops that are more flexible to manage. VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) is a virtual machine (VM) running on a server. It remains accessible to run on a desktop or mobile workstation.

VDI : Resilience

This flexibility explains the growth of this market. According to a study by Markets and Markets, this sector is set to grow from $8,423.1 million in 2017 to $25,496.3 million in 2025. All with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.1% over the forecast period (2018-2025).

Hosted on a server, virtual offices can be deployed on demand. This helps meet the need for flexibility in the workplace.

VDI offers other advantages. In cloud mode, this is known as DaaS (Desktop-as-a-Service). As the desktop computer is "installed" on the host server rather than on the workstation, hardware requirements are lower.

When it comes to corporate resilience, standardization of workstations is a major advantage. Virtual desktops can be deployed rapidly, and the IT security policy is managed directly by the IT manager or IT department from their administration console. (Integration of patches, backups, profile management...)

VDI therefore represents an attractive alternative to the fat client. But it won't suit all businesses and activities. Particularly if they require computing power or specific tools. It's best to be accompanied by experts to determine the most appropriate solution.
